아버지가 가끔 흥얼거리시는 노래다. 오늘 오후에 간만에 들었는데, 너무 좋아서 올려본다. 아버지 생각도 조금 나고.. 최근에 가족끼리 밥을 먹었는데, 내가 홍대에 자취방 틀고 음악하면서 살고 싶댔더니 엄마가 웃으면서 얘기했더랬다.
"너거 아빠는 뉴올리언스에서 재즈하면서 살고 싶다 안카드나 ㅋㅋㅋ"
우리 아버지는 통기타 징가징가하는 포크도 좋아하시고, 하모니카 붕붕붕 불면서 피아노 치는 이런 재즈도 좋아하시고, 그래 좀 올디하신 것 같다. 아빠가 어렸을 적에 느낄 수 있었던 최상의 멋이랄까, 물론 아들내미녀석이 느끼는 것과도 크게 다르지 않다. 나도 이런게 좋으니까.
나긋나긋하게 이야기하다가 팡 하고 터져나올때는 소름이 돋았다. 이런 전율을 느끼기가 참 쉽지 않은데.
가사는 잔잔한 편이다. 조곤조곤 이야기 하는 것 같다.
뭐 이런 생각이 든다. 재즈바에 앉아있는 사람들은 모두 다 제각각 애환을 가지고 있을 것이다. 그런 사람들이 모이는 바, 그리고 젊은 악사가 한 명 앉아있는데, 누군가 가서 이야기 하는거다. "저기, 노래 한 곡 해주겠나?"
사람들은 모여서 외로움을 홀짝거리는데, 역시 혼자 외로워하는 것보단 벗삼을 사람이 있는게 나은 것 같구나 - 라는 말도 하는 것 같다.
이 노래는 빌리 죠엘이 실제로 겪은 일을 노래로 만든 것이다. 그 풍경이 그려지는 것만 같아 정겹달지, 조금은 슬프달지.. 아래는 그 유래다.

"Piano Man" is a fictionalized retelling of real people Joel met during his days as a piano-lounge singer in
Los Angeles, after the failure of his first album,
Cold Spring Harbor.
[2] Joel's own personal feelings about this failure are expressed in the failed dreams of the characters in his song. At the time, Joel was trying to get out of a bad deal with the record company Family Productions, so, according to Joel, he was "hiding out" at the bar, performing under the name Bill Martin while Columbia Records tried to get him out of the deal.
